What we actually ask about.
A shortlist is only useful if every name on it has been tested against the environment they would be walking into. These are the dimensions that separate candidates who look right on paper from candidates who hold up in an interview.
- Facility type: hyperscale, colocation, wholesale, enterprise, edge
- Program scale in megawatts, square footage, or building count
- Greenfield versus expansion, retrofit, and Day 2 work in a live environment
- Commissioning level exposure, from factory acceptance through integrated systems testing
- Electrical scope: medium voltage, switchgear, UPS, generators, static transfer, distribution
- Mechanical scope: chilled water, CRAC and CRAH, air-cooled and liquid-cooled halls
- Controls exposure: BMS, EPMS, DCIM, alarm response, and change management
- Redundancy topologies worked in and maintenance practices under load
- Safety credentials: energised work practices, LOTO discipline, OSHA training, site badging
- Self-perform versus oversight, and direct reports managed
- Travel tolerance, rotation schedules, and relocation appetite
When a data center market runs thin, the closest transferable experience usually comes from semiconductor fabs, pharmaceutical and biotech facilities, mission-critical healthcare, utility substations, and heavy industrial projects with comparable commissioning and quality discipline. We flag adjacency explicitly rather than quietly widening the bar.
PE and EIT, PMP, CxA and ACG or BCxP credentials, CDCP and related data center certifications, OSHA 30, NFPA 70E training, first aid and CPR, and manufacturer-specific switchgear, UPS, and controls training.
